Bramble held over sex and drug claims

Sunderland defender Titus Bramble has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and possession of a Class A drug.

A club statement is expected to follow shortly.

Bramble, who was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning, is being held in a Stockton-on-Tees police station after being arrested in Yarm.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and possession of a class A drug.

"He is currently being questioned by police and inquiries are ongoing.’

Bramble, who has impressed for the Black Cats recently after a series of injuries hampered his Sunderland career, was jeered throughout Monday's defeat at Norwich because of his links with former club Ipswich.

The club said it was making inquiries but did not want to say anything more at this time.

A Sunderland spokesman said: "The club is looking into this matter but due to ongoing police investigations is unable to comment further at this stage."
