Torres rollercoaster hits new low as he scores

Fernando Torres’ rollercoaster season hit a new low yesterday.

After scoring a cracking goal to suggest the bad times were finally behind him, he was shown an automatic red card for a wild lunge on Mark Gower.

Torres will now serve a three match ban. But Chelsea boss André Villas-Boas refused to condemn his £50million striker’s indiscipline. Villas-Boas said: “There is nothing to apologise for, it’s the referee’s decision. Of course he is disappointed; every player is disappointed with being sent off.”

Just minutes after Torres saw red, Chelsea were presented with last season’s Fair Play Award by Premier League chairman Sir Dave Richards in a half-time ceremony.
